How effective is business gifting?

I would like to find data from a formal survey or poll verifying the benefits of business gifting. It is widely touted that business gifting can improve customer retention, increase referrals, etc, but I need verifiable (non-anecdotal) proof of this.

I run a small restaurant and I advertise on BdayDeal.com
it’s pretty cheap, $30 for a year listing. They target your business toward the birthday group. You can offer your customers some type of discounts on their birthday to attract them.
Coupons and buy-one-get-one-free offers always increase market share.
Geographic targeting with free offers for brick and mortar businesses like mine always has a fair return if the offer is placed where it can be seen.
You might find some information in Forrester research. Try contacting the major ad agencies to see if they can help with hard evidence.
Perhaps an association of nonprofits will have some information.
